Biography

Peter Doukas, MD is a medical oncologist and hematologist at Northwest Cancer Centers in Northwest Indiana, specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of solid tumors and blood cancers.
Throughout his medical training, Dr. Doukas was actively involved in clinical and translational cancer research. His research has spanned leukemia, lymphoma, CAR T-cell therapy, cardio-oncology, molecular diagnostics, cancer immunology, breast cancer and clinical outcomes research. He has authored and co-authored peer-reviewed publications in journals including Nature Communications, Blood, The Oncologist, Breast Cancer Research and Treatment, American Journal of Hematology, and Blood Cancer Journal. His work on the genetic landscape of rare cutaneous T-cell lymphomas was recognized by Nature Communications as an Editor's Highlight. He has also presented his research at national meetings of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), American Society of Hematology (ASH), American Heart Association (AHA), and American Society of Echocardiography (ASE).
Dr. Doukas' research experience gives him a particular interest in bringing advances in cancer biology, precision medicine, immunotherapy and emerging treatments into his clinical practice. He treats a broad range of cancers, including breast cancer, lung cancer, gastrointestinal cancers, genitourinary cancers and hematologic malignancies such as leukemia and lymphoma.
Having been raised in Northwest Indiana, Dr. Doukas chose to join Northwest Cancer Centers because he wanted to return to the community where he grew up and provide patients with personalized cancer care close to home. For Dr. Doukas, being able to guide patients from their initial diagnosis through treatment and, when possible, toward remission or cure is one of the most satisfying aspects of being a physician.
Dr. Doukas values the opportunity to bring precision medicine, innovative treatments, clinical research and clinical trial opportunities to patients in a community setting. He believes patients should have access to evidence-based treatment options tailored to their individual cancer. He emphasizes communication and shared decision-making, helping patients and their families understand their treatment options and feel supported throughout their care. Most importantly, he treats each person with the same compassion and respect he would want for his own family.
