Patient‑Led Cancer Support Groups: A Space Where Everyone Understands
"It's great to have a space where we can listen to each other, learn from each other, or just have a place where everyone in the room understands.”
Two new cancer support groups are launching in Dyer & Crown Point, offering a welcoming space for individuals who are contemplating cancer treatment, currently undergoing treatment, or living beyond. The group is open to anyone, regardless of where they received—or are receiving—their medical care.
Unlike many traditional support programs, this group is entirely patient led. It is built on the understanding that cancer survivors often find the greatest comfort and insight by connecting with others who have walked a similar path. The focus is on listening, shared experiences, and mutual encouragement rather than formal instruction or clinical advice.
There is no fee to attend and participants are invited to take part in ways that feel right for them—whether that means speaking openly, listening quietly, or simply being present. The group welcomes people at every stage of their cancer journey, including those still deciding on treatment, those in active care, and long‑term survivors.
Terry Schafer, a longtime cancer survivor who helped shape the group, emphasized the value of peer connection. “I always
feel better when I can talk about the low times and then celebrate the milestones with other patients,” Schafer said. “When I was first diagnosed, I was afraid and alone. I found it much easier to talk to other patients that had been through it. Most of us have loved ones who want to be there for us and do what they can but it's great to have a space where we can listen to each other, learn from each other, or just have a place where everyone in the room understands.”
Organizers say the group exists to fill that unique gap—providing understanding that goes beyond sympathy and comes from lived experience. There is no pressure to talk, no expectation to “stay positive,” and no requirement to have all the answers.
"Over the past several years, we have made significant strides on the clinical front to establish Northwest Cancer Centers as a regional destination for cancer care; We've introduced an innovative clinical trials program attracting patients not only from Indiana but from Illinois & Michigan as well. We have built a state-of-the-art integrated medicine cancer center in Crown Point, and expanded our team of highly skilled medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, and surgeons. These new support groups, along with our patient assistance foundation and emerging patient advocacy navigation services will strengthen our ability to grow a community of survivors in Northwest Indiana and beyond.", Dr. Peter Tothy
The Dyer group will meet at 1001 Calumet Ave from 5-6pm on the 1st Thursday every month. The Crown Point group will meet at 10191 Broadway, 2nd floor from 5-6pm on the 2nd Thursday every month. No advance registration is required. Community members who have been diagnosed with any type of cancer are encouraged to attend and see if the group is a good fit.
For many, organizers hope, this new support group will become a place of connection, reassurance, and shared strength—one conversation at a time.
